Topic: Leisure and Pleasure (B2 Level)

READING PASSAGE
You should spend about 20 minutes on Questions 1-14, which are based on the reading passage below.

The Evolution of Leisure: How We Unwind

A
In the past, the concept of leisure was relatively simple. For most of human history, daily life was dominated by physical toil, and free time was simply a necessary period of rest to recover from hard labor. Today, however, the boundaries between work and play are more complex. As societies industrialized, working hours became regulated, giving people a dedicated amount of time to pursue activities purely for pleasure rather than survival.

B
People generally divide their free time into two broad categories: active and passive pastimes. Active hobbies, such as cycling or hiking, are increasingly popular among those who spend their working days sitting at a desk. These outdoor pursuits not only keep individuals physically fit but also provide a much-needed change of scenery. On the other hand, passive activities like reading, watching television, or listening to music remain highly appealing ways to wind down and chill out after a tiring day.

C
The digital age has completely transformed our recreational habits. Gone are the days when families would rely solely on traditional board games for indoor entertainment. The advent of the internet and gaming consoles has introduced interactive digital entertainment into the mainstream. Many young people now spend hours building digital landscapes or competing in online tournaments, forming global virtual communities with fellow enthusiasts who share their passion.

D
Psychologists point out that engaging in a hobby is crucial for mental well-being. When individuals focus entirely on a rewarding activity, whether it is painting, gardening, or playing an instrument, they often experience a mental state known as ‘flow’. During this state, everyday worries disappear, and stress levels are significantly reduced. It offers a vital opportunity to switch off from the pressures of modern, fast-paced life.

E
Leisure has also become heavily commercialized. Recognizing that people are willing to spend a significant proportion of their income on their days off, companies have turned leisure into a massive global enterprise. From the booming tourism industry that caters to vacationers seeking exotic getaways, to the specialized manufacturers selling expensive gear for extreme sports, our desire to unwind is now a major driving force in the global economy.
