A long time ago, in the early 1700s, there were many pirates in the Caribbean Sea. This time was called the Golden Age of Piracy. Pirates were sailors who attacked other ships. They wanted to steal things like gold, silver, clothes, and food.
One of the most famous pirates was Blackbeard. His real name was Edward Teach. He had a very long, black beard and he looked very scary. He sailed a big, famous ship called Queen Anne’s Revenge.
Not all pirates were men. Anne Bonny and Mary Read were two famous female pirates. They wore men’s clothes to fight on the ships so nobody knew they were women at first.
Life on a pirate ship was very hard. The food was often bad, and many pirates got sick. The work was dangerous, too. But many sailors became pirates because they loved the adventure and they wanted to get rich quickly. Today, we can read about them in history books or watch them in popular movies.
